1、prevent作为v.t.的用法

To stop or keep from happening.

防止；使不发生。

例句：

His act prevented an accident.

To hinder, obstruct, or impede.

阻挠；阻碍；制止。

例句：

Illness prevented him form going out. = Illness prevented him [his] going out.

To go or arrive before.

2、prevent作为cf.的用法

To prevent is to stop or keep from happening.

Prevent 指阻止或使不发生：

例句：

Caution prevented the accident.

因谨慎而避免了意外之事。

To hinder is to prevent, but usually only for a time; the idea of delay is present in this work.

Hinder 指暂时阻止，有延滞之意：

例句：

Bad weather hindered the builders.

天不佳阻滞建筑业者。

Obstruct means to place something in the way of accomplishment; it is often applied to the checking of important actions.

Obstruct 指放置障碍物使之不利进行，常指制止重要之举动而言：
