Hundreds of Star Wars fans staged a mass lightsaber battle in the middle of a shopping centre after a covert web campaign.

The would-be Jedi brought their weapons to the Cabot Circus complex in Bristol as part of a 'flashmob' - a secret event organised online.

The glowing but harmless props lit up the centre earlier this month, and a film of the event has proved a big hit on YouTube.

Set to Star Wars music, the clip has so far gained 117,00 hits and been mentioned on the film's official fansite.

Shoppers were stunned when the gang drew their futuristic blades and began the melee on Saturday afternoon.

All had turned up at the agreed time following a long-running internet campaign.

City of Bristol College student Scott Waller, 20, was involved in the project and made a documentary about the event for his media course.

He told the Bristol Evening Post: 'It was quite a short event, we probably had around 100 to 200 people.

'Originally more than 2,000 people said they were going on the Facebook site.

'It was quite spontaneous. The organisers had just said take your lightsaber and go at it with whoever was stood next to you - it was crazy.'

He filmed and edited the clip with friends Benjamin Gabb and Dan Tonkin.

This time last year Cabot Circus was the scene of a charity 'flash mob freeze' where participants held poses of their own choosing for several minutes before going about their business.
