China charts course toward secure South China Sea
China will intensify patrols in the South China Sea to protect its fishermen amid a rising tide of disputes with neighboring countries.
A senior fishery official made the remarks at the start of a drill of seven vessels, including the country's largest fishery patrol ship, in the south most Hainan province.
Chinese fishermen arrested by foreign countries in disputed waters can be held for years, and boats and fishing equipment are often not returned.
In the latest such incident, Indonesia has held 75 Chinese fishermen and eight vessels for 10 days.
China's PMI of manufacturing sector rises to 53.2 pct in June
The Purchasing Managers' Index or PMI of China's manufacturing sector stood at 53.2 percent in June.
That's according to the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing.
The figure was up 0.1 percentage points from May.
A reading of above 50 suggests expansion.
One child survivor found in Yemeni crash
Search teams have rescued a child survivor from the Indian Ocean where a passenger jet from Yemen with 153 people on board crashed early Tuesday.
Several bodies from the flight have also been found, but no other survivors.
The Airbus A310 went into trouble as it was trying to land during heavy wind on the island nation of Comoros.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry says no Chinese Nationals are believed to be on the flight.
UN tells Honduras to reinstate president
Honduras' ousted president won overwhelming international support Tuesday as he planned a high-profile return to his chaotic country.
But Honduran politicians who orchestrated the coup said he will be arrested for treason if he does set foot on home soil.
The presidents of Argentina and Ecuador have signed on to accompany President Manuel Zelaya on a flight to Honduras on Thursday.
The U.N. General Assembly also voted by acclamation to demand Zelaya's immediate restoration.
Sweden to tackle debt, unemployment at EU helm
Sweden said the European Union must do more to fight rising public debt and unemployment, before taking over the EU presidency.
Sweden's six-month presidency started midnight Tuesday.
The Swedish government said EU leaders must also tighten supervision of the financial system, calling the time for pushing for more stimulus packages "exhausted."
Thousands left homeless in aftershock
An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 has damaged thousands of houses in Sichuan province, where a devastating quake last year left nearly 90,000 people dead.
Experts say the quake was an aftershock of last year's catastrophe.
It was accompanied by another aftershock, measuring about 5.0 magnitude.
Eight quake-related injuries were officially announced.
Some 57,000 aftershocks have been recorded in Sichuan since last May.
China again stresses addressing Korean peninsula nuclear issue via six-party talks
China has reaffirmed its desire to seek Korean peninsula denuclearization through the six-party talks mechanism.
The Foreign Ministry says China will continue to keep communication with the other concerned parties, even without the participation of North Korea.
The talks have been stalled since last December.
Taiwan opens door to Chinese mainland investment
Taiwan has opened up key parts of its manufacturing and service sectors to mainland investment as another barrier falls across the Straits.
Under the new rules, Chinese mainland companies will be able to invest in 100 categories of local business.
Officials say the percentage of mainland ownership will be subject to approval on a case-by-case basis.
Govt delays order on porn filter software
In a last-minute move, the Chinese government has said it will delay the mandatory installation of the controversial "Green Dam-Youth Escort" filtering software on new computers.
The installations were scheduled to start today.
The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology told Xinhua News Agency some computer producers said such a massive installation demanded extra time.
It did not set a date for when the order to install the software would come into force.
Car bomb kills 15 in Iraq
15 people have been killed and 30 others wounded in a car bomb explosion in the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk.
The blast occurred Tuesday when U.S. combat forces reached its deadline withdrawing from Iraqi towns and cities.
Security responsibilities have been handed to Iraqi security forces.
Both Iraqi and U.S. officials have warned people of possible attacks in the transitional period.
Xinhua kicks off English TV news service
China's official Xinhua News Agency has put on trial its English TV news service, in an effort to reach a global audience by introducing new forms of media.
The English TV news stories are gathered by Xinhua reporters across China and in more than 110 countries and regions.
