Rajapaksa Set To Be Re-elected Sri Lankan President

Mahinda Rajapaksa seems all set to be re-elected Sri Lankan President after extending his lead over his main rival, retired Army Chief of Staff General Sarath Fonseka, in the presidential election results being announced Wednesday.

With more than a million votes counted by 6 a.m. local time (0030 hrs. GMT), Rajapaksa secured 689,261 or 60.01 percent of the votes polled as against Fonseka's 442,292 or 38.51 percent.

The retired four-star General, who ran on his record of winning the war against the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), had counted on support from Tamil voters, fed up with the incumbent, and a split in the ethnic Sinhala vote.

The Department of Elections said the island-republic's sixth presidential election Tuesday was held largely free of violence, with a turnout estimated to be over 70 percent.

It said 14.08 million Sri Lankans were eligible to vote to choose their next president from among 22 candidates, with Rajapaksa and Fonseka being the main contenders.

Rajapaksa called the election two years ahead of schedule to encash on his popularity with the majority Sinhalas after ending the island's 25-year-long bloody ethnic conflict with the LTTE earlier last year.

Fonseka, who commanded the Army to defeat the rebels from 2006 to 2009, is equally credited for the victory. He is reported holed up in Cinnamon Lakeside Hotel along with his allies in the capital Colombo.
