Jay Chou (traditional Chinese:周杰伦,simplified Chinese:周杰伦,pinyin:Zhōu Jiélún,Born on January 18,1979) is a popular Taiwanese musician specializing in R&B and rap.He is known for his innovative usage of combining both Western and Chinese music styles to produce a fresh sound that is quite unlike what is produced in mainstream Taiwanese pop,and also unique lyrics which touch on various issues.
Jay Chou was born on the 18th of January,1979 in Taiwan. He was raised by his mother and was shy and quiet during his childhood.Showing interest in music,he began learning to play the piano at the age of 3.By age 16,he was writing songs for popular artists of that time.
Jay first entered the music industry when he appeared in a talent show with his friend, where he accompanied as the pianist. They failed miserably in making a mark on television, but the producer saw the line notes written by Jay was good,so he decided to take a chance on him.Due to Jay’s looks not being good enough for the instant stardom that many of his colleagues could easily attain,he was initially hired to compose songs and write lyrics for others, including Vivian Hsu and Jolin Tsai. Many of his songs became instant hits, though most people were not aware that they were his creations.
In 2000,it was decided that Jay should be given his chance to produce an album of his own.He released his first album Jay,which much to everyone’s surprise became an instant hit.It gained great attention among the international Chinese-speaking community (including Mainland China,Taiwan,Hong Kong,Malaysia,Philippines,Singapore,Indonesia, etc). When his second album Fantasy was released he was already among one of the top pop stars in the Chinese-speaking community. His most critically and financially successful album as of yet is his third,Eight Dimensions.

Jay Chou was born in Taipei, Taiwan, and raised by his mother, who was a high school teacher. He began playing the piano at the age of 3, showing enormous interest in music. While he was in third grade, he found an interest in cello and had daily cello lessons. His mother took him to concerts to help further develop his talents. His parents divorced when he was 14; as a result, he became very independent. Jay studied piano with a minor in cello at Dan Jiang Senior High School. This accounts for his solid background in classical music. In June 1996, Jay did not meet the requirements of his selected university, so he found a job as a waiter.
Jay's first encounter with the music industry was when he entered a talent show as a pianist with his high school friend. Although their performance wasn't exceptional, the producer Jacky Wu saw talent in Jay's composition and decided to give him a chance. He was initially hired to write and produce music for others, including Vivian Hsu, Jolin Tsai and Jody Hui Chiang. Although many of his songs became popular, most people were unaware that they were his creations.
In 2000, Jay has his own album debut by producing and releasing Jay, which, much to everyone's surprise, became an instant hit. It gained great attention in Taiwan as well as the international Chinese community (including mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, and Singapore). When his second album Fantasy was released, he was already among one of the top pop stars in the Asian community. His most critically and financially successful album as of yet is his third, Eight Dimensions.
Jay's fourth CD was named after his mother, Ye Hui Mei. This revolutionary album reveals that Jay is not afraid to experiment with new styles and sounds. He shows a willingness to break his "love ballad" mold and show a more daring and edgy side.
Common Jasmine Orange, Jay's fifth CD, was released on August 3, 2004; the next year, Jay played the leading role Takumi Fujiwara in the movie Initial D, which was based on a popular Japanese anime and manga of the same name. Despite the fact that he won the award for Best Newcomer at the 42nd Golden Horse Awards and the 25th Hong Kong Film Awards for his role in the movie, the movie was a disaster for Jay's public image. Even those of his fans thought the movie revealed his lack of understanding and experience in basic acting. His elaboration of the character Takumi Fujiwara lacked vitality and emotion as certain critics have harshly stated, "he elaborated and acted the character Takumi Fujiwara as a mental retard". Other well known celebrities also appeared in the film, such as Anne Suzuki, Stephen Yung, Edison Chen, Shawn Yue, Chapman To, and Anthony Wong.
Initial J, his greatest hits compilation, was released in 2005 in Japan only. The name is a play on his movie role, Initial D.
Jay's November's Chopin was released in November 2005. It is based on Frederic Chopin, one of his favourite composers of all time. Jay composed the first song in the album, "Nocturne" (夜曲), which was greatly influenced by Chopin's music. Both Chopin and Jay are nicknamed in Chinese, "piano poets" (钢琴诗人). The album was criticized for being to similar to his last album and not improving, sales of the album also weren't as great as past albums. Jay personally wasn't nominated for any golden melody award but the album was.
In January 2006, Jay released his latest EP "Huo Yuan Jia (霍元甲)" which includes the theme song he composed for Jet Li's latest and, allegedly, last martial arts film, Fearless. In the MV for 'Huo Yuan Jia', Jay has a turn at swinging the Chinese Weapon, "Three Sectional Staff".
September 5, 2006 marked the release of his seventh album Still Fantasy.
Jay Chou has completed production with Tony Leung Chiu Wai on a $7.7 million U.S. project. He composed and performd "Chrysanthemum Flower Bed (菊花台)", the end credit's song to Chinese director Zhang Yimou's new movie, Curse of the Golden Flower in which he also co-stars. In addition, Jay Chou will star in the Japanese anime re-make "Slam Dunk".
Musical Style
Jay Chou's musical style is similar to that of most singers in Asia, but it can be argued that he has created his own genre of music. His early work emphasizes R&B influences, but as his popularity skyrocketed and more albums came out, his style slowly changed into something that many people call "Jay style". He started singing different genres of music and developed great interest in Chinese-style music, or "中国风". Songs like "Eastern Wind Breaks" (东风破) and "Hair Like Snow" (发如雪) demonstrate that he is more than a standard pop singer. He also sang rock in "All the Way North" (一路向北) and bossanova in 迷迭香 (Rosemary). For his new movie Curse of the Golden Flower, Jay sang the end credits' song, known as "Chrysanthemum Flower Bed" (菊花台). The song was influenced by ancient Chinese styles, and Chou sang very clearly and slowly, in contrast to his usual style.
Collaborations
Jay Chou has been collaborating with Nan Quan Ma Ma, a group that is a hybrid of pop, R&B, and rap. As a result, Jay has helped to improve this group tremendously, making it very popular in Hong Kong. In the music video for Twilight's Chapter Seven in Still Fantasy, he worked with two members from Nan Quan Ma Ma, Devon and Yuri, to produce an English-style detective murder case, which he directed. Jay has also collaborated with artists such as Chinese pop singers Landy Wen, Lara Veronin (from Nan Quan Ma Ma), Jolin Tsai, Vivian Hsu, DOMiNiQUE, and Patty Hou (for a charity show); he has tied international cultures together in his music by featuring producer Michael Lin rapping in Korean and using Thai in his album November's Chopin. In his latest album "Still Fantasy" he recorded a duet called "Faraway" with a famous Taiwanese ballad singer, Fei Yu Qing, the tenor with a golden voice.

[edit] Movie career
Chou formally entered the film industry in 2005 with the release of the movie Initial D (澶存枃瀛桪).He has since acted in three other movies, directed one film and more than a dozen music videos.Chou, who once said "I live because of music",[39] ventured into movies because he felt the need for a new challenge. As fans have grown concerned that movies will compromise his music career,Chou has repeatedly reassured that movies are a source of inspiration and not a distraction; at the same time,he realizes the need to balance both careers and maintain his place in the music field to garner the continued support of fans.[40][41][42][43]
[edit] Acting
Entry into acting was an unexpected move for Chou.[41] His high school English teacher thought he was capable of very few facial expressions,[4] and the director of Hidden Track (2003,a movie in which Chou had a cameo role) said that his strong individualistic personality will not make him a good actor.[44] In 2005,Chou's first role as the lead actor in Initial D served two purposes:to launch his acting debut, and to increase his exposure to Japanese audiences.[45] This film is based on the Japanese comic Initial D,where Chou played Takumi Fujiwara,a gifted touge racer who is quiet and rarely shows expression. Some reviewers criticized his bland acting[46] while others felt he performed naturally, but only because the character鈥檚 personality closely mirrored his own.[47][48] His performance in Initial D won him Best Newcomer Actor in Golden Horse Awards and Hong Kong Film Awards.[49][50] Chou鈥檚 second film was Curse of the Golden Flower (2006).As a supporting character,he drew much of the attention of Chinese reporters; Chou鈥檚 involvement in this movie was announced in its own press conference,[51] separate from the meeting held for Chow Yun-Fat,Gong Li,and the other actors.Chou portrayed Prince Jai,the ambitious second eldest prince and general of the Imperial army whose personality epitomizes Xiao (瀛?,the Chinese virtue of filial piety. In this internationally-released film,North American audiences saw Chou for the first time.According to Chinese movie critics, comments about his acting ranged from "lacks complexity"[52] to "acceptable,"[53][54] but was critically praised by Western reviewers.[55][56][57][58][59] His performance in Curse of the Golden Flower was nominated Best Supporting Actor in the Hong Kong Film Awards.[60] For his third movie,he is the lead actor and director for Secret;he also composed all the songs from this movie. In this film,he played a piano genius who fell in love with a time-traveling girl from the past.Another movie,Kung Fu Dunk, with him portraying a kungfu student and dunking prodigy, was also released in 2008.
[edit] Directing
Promotional poster for Secret featuring Chou as a director for the first time.Chou's acquired his first directing experience in 2004 through music videos. He initially experimented with a song by the group Nan Quan Mama titled "Home" (Chinese:瀹蝶 pinyin:ji膩) where he was involved throughout the entire process from research to editing. After learning the difficulties of being a director,he refused to direct again even at the request of his record company.[39] However, his interest resurfaced again as he directed music videos for 4 of the 12 songs in own album November's Chopin in 2005,[61] and later television advertisements.[62][63] By 2006,he had taken responsibility for the storyboard, directing, and editing of music videos for all his songs.[40] It is unclear how the public appraises his work, since music videos are rarely the subject of critical review; however, director Zhang Yimou said that Chou's directing abilities may surpass his own in the future, after viewing several of Chou's music videos.[64][51]
In February 2007,Chou finally directed his first movie Secret. The story he wrote is based loosely on his relationship with a high school girlfriend, with a plot focused on music, love, and family.[65] He stars as the lead actor of the film with Kwai Lun-Mei? as the female lead, and Hong Kong veteran actor Anthony Wong as Chou鈥檚 father.Despite previous experience in filming music videos,Chou admits that movies are more challenging due to storyline and time constraints.[65] This movie was released in July 2007.[66]
[edit] Book:Grandeur de D Major
Chou published his first book titled Grandeur de D Major (traditional Chinese:D璋冪殑鍗庝附; simplified Chinese:D璋冪殑鍗庝附; pinyin:D di脿o de hu谩l矛) on November 25,2004.[k] This 200-page book features a prologue written by his family, friends, and co-workers; the main section is a compilation of his personal attitudes, philosophies, and recollections of childhood experiences along with pictures from his music videos, many of which have never been released; and lastly,a list of the artist's major awards, musical and lyrical compositions, and discography. For the usually low-profile singer, this book revealed his personality and convictions that has served as the basis of his musical and public image. He demonstrated a strong appreciation of family values with an especially deep connection with his mother and maternal grandmother. His confidence and dedication towards music is evident as he dedicated 2 out of 7 chapters to music:the current state of the industry, his composition methodology, and the importance of individualism to his success in music. This pride is contrasted against his modesty and self-assessed naivety about many aspects in life, particularly regarding relationships and marriage
