CONTENT： Carbon dioxide emissions from the energy sector plateaued in 2014, according to preliminary figures from the International Energy Agency.
If the figures are confirmed in June, it will be the first time in 40 years that the rise in emissions has stalled in the absence of a financial crisis.
The IEA announced today that global emissions from energy generation in 2014 were 32.3 billion tonnes of carbon, the same as in 2013. The figure was reported by the agency's chief economist Fatih Birol, citing preliminary figures from a report on climate change and energy due out in June.
There have only been three times when emissions have stood still or fallen compared with the previous year, and all were associated with weak global economy: the early 1980s, 1992 and 2009. In 2014, however, the global economy expanded by 3 per cent, says the IEA. There were previous signs of a slowdown in 2012, but 2013 saw a sharp rise in the rate of carbon emissions.
