First started in 1963, the Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival is one of the largest ice and snow festivals in the world. For this event, huge blocks of ice are cut and hauled out of the frozen Songhua River. Ice sculptors use a variety of tools to turn these blocks of ice into amazing creations ranging from mermaids to castles. At night, these sculptures are lighted up, creating a colorful winter wonderland.
Meanwhile, a snow sculpture fair takes place on nearby Sun Island. There, artists construct massive snow sculptures that can be up to 250 meters long! The works are beautiful but short-lived, as they end up melting in the spring.
In addition to the Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival, Harbin offers plenty of other winter activities like skiing, sledding, and even winter-swimming in the Songhua River. These sub-zero activities attract hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. So if you don’t mind the cold, the “Ice City” of Harbin is certainly worth visiting.
