Under the Hawthorn Tree is adapted from the love story of the same name which has been a hit on the internet since 2007. The film follows Jingqiu, a girl whose family has been under close scrutiny since her father was labeled a rightist, and Laosan, a boy with a promising future from a well-to-do family. As a director born in the 1950s, Zhang Yimou lived through the Cultural Revolution and when he read the novel, he found no problem in identifying with the writer.

《山楂树之恋》表达的情感是一定是很多人想有但不曾有的,我也承认片中所谓的纯情稍微有些矫枉过正,而且无论是放在现在这个色欲横行的世界,还是置于彼时那个思想相对单纯的年代,这样的纯情都显得有些过分不食人间烟火,但是它符合爱情最根本最原始的特质,而且张艺谋通过对这一爱情有意的纯洁化,达到了动情但不煽情的效果,因此我愿意相信那种纯美.

《唐山大地震》在商业上的成功,完全是因为三十二年间两场自然灾难对中国人的心灵伤害和放之四海而皆准的母子亲情催发的,对于两场地震背后的人祸,根本不能也无力去批判.比之于《唐山大地震》,张艺谋的《山楂树之恋》显然没有那么多的现实政治因素的羁绊,从那个年代过来的人,看到的一定是个体爱情在混乱年代和残酷生活面前的无言与无奈.片中人物多次提到“万一政策变了”这句话.今天的人们可能根本无法深刻体会这句台词背后隐藏着的那个时代国人的辛酸和悲苦,一次又一次的政治运动把人们搞得晕头转向,被激情填满胸膛的集体又充满着集体的迷惘,政治的动荡导致了民众对政策延续性和稳定性的怀疑,而与之息息相关的是个体的不能自决的命运,天堂或地狱都取决于这个“政策”发生的变化.影片没有过多也无法揭示时代背景中的种种阴暗面,但是从电影中的某些惊鸿一瞥式的具有时代特征的事件中,依然能感受到深烙于中国民众心头的时代之殇.
应该承认就整个故事而言,存在着局部过分美化的成分,但两位新演员尤其是周冬雨的单纯而干净的表演严重地弥补了这一不足,并没让人感觉到做作,让人愿意相信那份纯美.银幕上的这个周冬雨绝对要比银幕下纯净得多也美得多,张艺谋选角时说他相信自己的眼光,肯定周冬雨在镜头面前一定光彩照人,事实表明张艺谋没说假话,他的确有这个能耐.但是在老三在逼静秋去医院看脚伤时自残这段戏上出了问题,不是说这个过程不真实,而是演员没有做出与之相适应的反应,表演十分刻意.但是就整体表现而言,周冬雨堪称完美.另外,应该说张艺谋对于画面的控制能力还是很有特色也很见功力的,这是他的长处.但是难以理解的是,以张艺谋的经验不会不知道频繁的字幕切入,不但会影响影片的节奏,同时也会暴露叙事能力的不足,这个错误实在有些自废武功的意思.幸亏这电影故事本身就是一个非常舒缓的过程,这种处置不当也并没有对影片观赏性形成致命伤害.
老三和静秋的爱情虽然被张艺谋故意纯洁化,但这种纯洁化仅仅是在意境上的纯洁化,两人不敢拉手不敢约会等等情境都是真实的,都可以从上一代人的切身经历中得到验证,两人之间的那种若即若离欲说还休的情感正是那个时代的基本特征,具有真实性,用现代人被A片熏陶出来的眼光来衡量其“纯度”没有丝毫意义,只是一种自说自话的文字卖弄.当年,有无数情意相合的人因为成分和出身的问题因为政策的问题,而落得劳燕分飞天各一方,所以在影院中的中年人暗自垂泪正是对过往的自伤.这种情怀岂是已经丧失了爱情基本原则而被“锤炼”得百毒不侵的当今新新人类所能体会得到的?从某种程度上讲,现代人都不配谈“纯情”二字,纯吗?所以都TM别装了.至于把对现实的不满硬要往电影扯那其实也很容易,但是总有些被邪火烧得找不着北的感觉.正因为现实中的爱情是如此物质和如此肉欲,所以那传说中的爱情才显得如此纯美如此珍贵,并且这种传说的爱情的的确确真的存在过,倘若脱离了影片所反映的时代特征而单纯地去计较张艺谋的个人艺术追求,那实在是强人所难和吹毛求疵,还敢装?如果这种爱情都不算纯,那什么才是纯?牛郎织女天河配吗?
现实中的爱情都被房子、车子、面子、票子和精子所困扰,很难不带丝毫物质目的单纯地去爱和被爱,我承认自己已经被那种情境所感染,所以我很入戏.我喜欢这电影的另外一个原因是,尽管我肉体上十分迷恋这个时代,但精神上却向往我没经历过的那个时代,那个在我看来贫穷而坚强愚蠢但可爱的时代.因此,我愿意相信那种纯那种美.
